The Minority Report: Are the Polls Missing Trump Voters?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Glennis is back from Iowa, where Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks literally ran from her Epstein files questions at a Hawkeyes tailgate and Brian is here to challenge the polls.
Four weeks out from Election Day, the vibes are high but not giddy. Brian Derrick breaks down the DCCC adding six more Republican-held seats to its Red to Blue program, some in districts Trump carried by double digits, and why Republican gerrymanders in Texas and Florida, drawn off 2024 turnout, could end up costing them seats. Then the Minority Report: new data on where pollsters are struggling to reach Republicans (Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio) raises the question of whether the polls are missing Trump voters. The answer is the same either way: make a voting plan and vote early.
SCOTUS is back. Justice Samuel Alito tells CBS News he's weighing retirement every term, and Brian walks through the lame-duck scenario if Democrats flip the Senate. Glennis previews the docket, starting with Suncor v. Boulder County, the climate case over whether communities can sue oil companies. Ken Paxton is already pointing fingers in Texas after telling donors Trump's Dallas convention dropped his numbers. And we roll the tape on Susan Collins and Troy Jackson's first Maine Senate debate, road salt and all.
For Clickbait or Double-Click this week we get into whether Trump should pay taxpayers back for his personal DHS-funded campaign ads, the horror show that is Tennessee's failed execution of Christa Pike, and why we need to double click on the Justice Department refilling its depleted ranks with partisans and conspiracy theorists. Also we’ve got a Good Vibe Goodbye from Kentucky, where Gov. Andy Beshear's executive order erasing $250 million in medical debt for 130,000 Kentuckians begins sending letters of relief to real consituents - no application required. Plus Brian prepares Glennis for her to take her tour to Ohio this weekend.

THE OATH CANDIDATE OF THE WEEK: https://app.oath.vote/cart?q=Christina+Bohannan
I'm Brian Derrick.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:And I'm Glennis Meagher.
BRIAN DERRICK:This week on Vibes Only.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Democrats look strong for the House. Republican gerrymanders are backfiring, and voters seem ready to be done with Trump for good, question mark?
BRIAN DERRICK:Then Glennis is back from Iowa with the minority report, including Mariannette Miller-Meeks running away from questions about the Epstein files.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Plus, Trump won't pay back the taxpayer money spent on his ads. Quelle surprise. Alito faces pressure to retire, and Susan Collins debates Troy Jackson.
BRIAN DERRICK:Let's get into it Forgot my breakfast
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Oh, no. Poor you
BRIAN DERRICK:So I'm eating whole carrots. I'm so hungry.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Your skin's gonna turn orange. I have no food in my apartment, and I'm starving, so…
BRIAN DERRICK:Bus, club, rally, election, polling places. It is go time. Glennis, how are we feeling? Dickens.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I'm feeling good. I'm on the road now, so I'm like bus, club, another club, another club. I don't know if you saw any of our viral content come out of Iowa.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah. Yes.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Chasing down Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who won- I love it … by six votes, with the fact that she refused to vote to release the Epstein files. Mariannette, are you- Here's my thing. If you're a staffer, are you really gonna send your congressional candidate into a Iowa Hawkeyes tailgate next to Kinnick Stadium alone? Solo?
BRIAN DERRICK:Not if they're a Republican. In this economy, let me tell you, if you're Mamdani or Abdul El-Sayed or something, sure, because they can hold their own on a mic. But these Republicans are literally trying to hide as much as possible.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:She physically ran away from us, like physically ran away. It was comical. So yeah, Iowa, I was like, this was my first on-the-ground midterm weekend and I'm like, "We are in it, baby." I talked to a lot of college students who had no intention of voting, though.
BRIAN DERRICK:Okay. Well, we're definitely gonna talk about it, and everything else as it relates to the midterms. It is that time of year. Glennis and I are both a haggard mess. We're starving. We haven't slept. We're working around the clock. I'm just trying to hold it together for a couple more weeks and collapse on the other side of Election Day, but thanks, y'all, for tuning in. Should we get into it?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Let's get into it.
BRIAN DERRICK:Do you wanna start with Iowa or do we wanna start national? You tell me.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Let's start national. Let's, like, zoom out. What… How are we feeling? What's the big picture? Has any polling changed? I saw some really interesting numbers on Kansas- Mm-hmm … Texas. But I'm still concerned
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah. The vibes, I think, are high. I think that people are optimistic, but- Sure … but not joyous because I was looking back at some 2024 clips and reels and posts on Instagram and whatnot, and it, it's not like that. It definitely doesn't feel like-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Change… BRIAN DERRICK: exciting in that way. Maybe bec- I mean, partially 'cause it's just not a presidential, but I think also people have been burned many times. And so- Mm-hmm … people are feeling aggressive. People wanna play in red states, and Kansas is suddenly looking competitive, and South Carolina is suddenly looking competitive and all these things. But I think in the back of people's mind, they're a little bit like,"I've heard this story before." We have played starring roles in this movie of being optimistic, seeing a, a bright future where we could push people to be more progressive in front of us, and here we are in Trump 2.0. So yeah, that's like the vibe, right? People are like, "Okay, there's maybe some opportunity here, but let's see what happens on November 3rd."
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah. I think that's right. The challenge right now is trying to keep people focused on the real things and the winnable things and the things that they can do because we always know that there's gonna be a shiny object. But it's pretty consistent where help is needed the most and where power is really gonna be decided. Yeah. And it's not the Kansas Senate race or the South Carolina Senate race or those kinds of things. It's further down the ballot. It's gubernatorial races. Mm. It's securing or breaking trifectas. It's all kinds of things that are going under the radar that will actually determine how good of a year it is for Democrats, not whether we flip Florida's Senate seat Sorry
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Even though that would be really cool and great. Just
BRIAN DERRICK:saying. I'm not gonna say no. I'm not gonna say no if it's offered. Yeah. But-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah… BRIAN DERRICK: I think let's talk We've talked a lot about the Senate. The Senate is an uphill battle. Democrats need to flip four seats in order to secure the barest of majorities, and we have John Fetterman. So people should just put that in the back of their mind, that it's like- Yeah … Joe Manchin 2.0 all over again. Oh, my God. Um, and- Forgot about him.
BRIAN DERRICK:I know. My God. That, that wasn't even that long ago.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I know, but Brian, I mean, look at Mitch McConnell. Like, it's hard to keep up with the oldies.
BRIAN DERRICK:It is hard to keep up with the oldies. So in the battle for the House, Dems are looking really good. They have added six more seats to what's known as the Red to Blue program, which is the DCCC, the Democrats' House campaign arm. They've added six additional targets of seats that they're trying to flip because they're feeling very bullish. Some of those are even Trump plus 20 seats- Wow … from 2024. That's crazy. So the numbers that they're seeing, the polling that they're doing is definitely showing an amazing year for Democrats. People are talking about 2006 as the most recent midterm election that is analogous. We don't know- We don't know if, if the, if it's gonna be at that level. But what we do know is even if it's not a 2006 all over again, what it is going to be is proof that Republicans' gerrymandering efforts were for naught.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:For naught. For naught.
BRIAN DERRICK:Um, were a big fucking waste, and actually-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah… BRIAN DERRICK: may have helped that is going to cost them so many seats in the House. Okay, why? Is it because they actually drew the maps wrong, or because the public are pissed about being manipulated in that way and being put in districts that don't actually represent them? Both?
BRIAN DERRICK:Both! Both. Yeah. Which we love. So they drew the maps based on the 2024 vote when Republicans were so high on their own supply, thought that Latinos had embraced the Republican Party forever, thought that young people were, like, diehard MAGA now, and so they redrew all these maps based on that voter turnout. People had buyer's remorse, as we've talked about, real quick from 2024 once they started assassinating people in the streets. They were like, "Oops, I just wanted gas to be cheaper." Now gas is double the cost that it was. Oops.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Literally double,
BRIAN DERRICK:yeah. And people are no longer looking like their 2024 vote is a good predictor of their next vote. Because they used that data to draw the maps, the maps were drawn wrong. They thought that they were drawing, like, R plus 10, R plus 12, or even 15 seats, and they might actually be like R plus five seats or R plus one seats or D plus one seats in this environment-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah… BRIAN DERRICK: when In 2028, it's a different story, and we have to deal the, with that- Yeah when we get to it because we might not be in a environment that has the Democrats up 10 points on the generic ballot. But for now, it looks like they actually cost themselves seats through the gerrymander because they gerrymandered Texas and Florida, most notably, thinking that they were gonna get 10 seats out of that. They're not. They might get, like, four. But we redistricted California and got new maps in Utah to counteract that. And so- Yeah … actually could be a net gain for Dems- Yeah … from those redraws. Yeah. Dems were like, "Two can play that game." Did you see that New Political poll this morning that, to your point about 2028, that 50% of Dem midterm voters say that if Dems win, it's because of how bad Trump is, while only 35% say it's because of truly good policies from Dems. Totally. So that's like the tea leaves, right? This is a referendum on Trump and how badly he's turned this country into a dumpster fire and impacted people's daily cost of living and basic human rights, not that they're so inspired by and motivated by Democratic candidates. So take note.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yes, I agree. But that is also the nature of a midterm election cycle.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah.
BRIAN DERRICK:Midterms are a referendum on the party in power. Democrats do not have an elected leader right now. Yeah. We have somebody in the Senate. We have somebody in the House. They're both in the minority. And then we have a bunch of candidates, most of whom are not even in office, spending billions of dollars behind different messages, different issues, different takes, different plans and paths forward. And that's- Yeah … just how a midterm goes. It actually helps our candidates that they can have their own message, and they don't all need to either agree with or disagree with someone at the top of the ticket who's saying something different, whereas Republicans are all being whipped around by Donald Trump saying he wants more data centers. Suddenly, like, when Trump says he wants more data centers and data centers are good, every Republican has to respond and either say, "I disagree with the president," or,"Yes, I'm pro-data center," both of which are terrible options for them. So I wouldn't expect a bunch of people to be like, "Wow, I'm blown away by Democrats' cohesive plans for next year," because Republicans will still be in power. That's not the name of the game. Trump will still be in the White House. Yeah. There's nothing that they can, they can do. So that will change in '28 when we have a leading presidential candidate or a bunch of them that are pitching- Mm … a proactive vision for what it looks like to move on from this chapter of American history. Away from Trump, with him out of the White House permanently. Hallelujah, we're so close to having that be a daily talking point.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah.
BRIAN DERRICK:Then we'll have a vision that people can get excited about. We'll have someone running for office who's under the age of 70, and can actually speak to what the future is gonna be. And then- Yeah … people can rally around that.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:My concern is that we do well in the midterms and Dems are like, "Well, we did that." So I'm projecting the, the take note. Like, I need our strategists, our leadership to actually do something with the momentum, so.
BRIAN DERRICK:I hear you. No one hates Democrats more than Democrats. I hear you. No one beats up on Democrats more than Democrats. Yeah. And so I have no, I'm under no illusion that-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah… BRIAN DERRICK: post-midterms like, "Damn, we're amazing. Like, we, we really have it all figured out now." I'm like, "No, I don't think so." Like- Not really… BRIAN DERRICK: yeah, yeah, yeah. But that's- Um just kind of the nature of the beast. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Well-
BRIAN DERRICK:So polling headlines and vibes are all pointing to big Democratic wins in November. I do like to listen to the Minority Report because I learned a lesson from one of my favorite movies from the, what, '90s? 2000s.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:What movie? Minority Report?
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah. Tom Cruise.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah, it's… I know about Minority Report. I actually just watched it for the first time, I think, like, two years ago. Remind me the plot. What?
BRIAN DERRICK:It's a
GLENNIS MEAGHER:good- I know… BRIAN DERRICK: it's a good movie. My friend, like, sat me down in, like, a chamber of secrets and was like, "You have to watch Minority Report."
BRIAN DERRICK:Um- Wait, that was me this weekend with a group.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I
BRIAN DERRICK:made a- So
GLENNIS MEAGHER:what did you make them watch?
BRIAN DERRICK:I made a-- No, I made a White Chicks joke, and no one had seen White Chicks, and I was like-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah. Well, can I ask the age demo? The age demo of the group?
BRIAN DERRICK:30s. It was absurd. They should've seen White Chicks. Yeah. It was-- And some of them listen to this, so shame on you. We need to schedule time to view- Yeah … this important piece of culture. Mandatory. More important- Okay, Mino- More importantly … yeah,
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Minority Report.
BRIAN DERRICK:Minority Report. Yeah. There is some data that's giving me a little bit of hesitation that there is an alternate sort of interpretation of some of what's going on that results in less of a sweeping, like, blowout election- Yeah for Dems. There's some data coming out from State Navigate, which is one of the only groups in the country that does data collection at the state legislative level, and it's showing that one of the seats that we flipped in a special election since Trump got elected has flipped back to Republicans. This is in Iowa. And so Iowa's one of the places that- Where
GLENNIS MEAGHER:in Iowa? Now that I feel like d- directly connected to Iowa, I'm like, where in Iowa? Who was it?
BRIAN DERRICK:I don't know, man. I know. I mean, it's S- it's like SD 35, but I don't know- Okay … where in Iowa that is. I'll have, I'll have to look it up. It's, uh, S- yeah, SD 35. I'm brilliant. Got the memory of an elephant over here.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Period.
BRIAN DERRICK:What they're saying is Trump voters are systematically hiding and being undercounted in these polls. And then a separate polling firm came out and gave an analysis of where it's the hardest to contact Republicans. You don't just call random people for a poll. You call Republicans, you ask them how they're feeling. You call Democrats, you ask them how they're feeling. You call independents, you ask them how they're feeling, and then you weight their answers to reflect- Yeah … what you think the overall electorate in that state looks like. In this map, the exact places where they are currently having the hardest time reaching Republicans to get those opinions are the exact states where Democrats are overperforming the most in polls. It's Iowa, it is Kansas, it is Nebraska, Ohio. So the exact places- Okay … where currently Dems are feeling the most bullish because of polling that have, in recent elections, been bad for Dems-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Well… BRIAN DERRICK: is exactly minority report, but could be a systemic error in the polling. Yeah. And, and to be clear, I mean, like in Kansas, they haven't sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1932, so it's not like Basically what you're saying is that there could be a world in which Republicans are, like, purposely evading calls from pollsters or, like, deliberately not showing their hand, and that is why the polls that we are seeing for these key swing states are so favorable for Dems because Republicans just aren't answering the phone and telling them what they're thinking or how they're voting. All of that to say, that's the thesis of Vibes Only, the podcast, which is polling says one thing. You can't trust it. Vibes also says another thing. We talked about it in the beginning of the pod of, like, it's not f- feeling that joyful. Everyone still has work to do. There's less than a month. I'm gonna die on this hill. Text your people, call your people, make a voting plan, vote early because yeah, we could find out that Republicans are just like… Do I think they're strategic enough in SD 35 in Iowa to be like, "Don't answer the phone. We're gonna trick 'em"? No. But maybe they just don't wanna talk about it and they're like silent MAGA warriors and they're just gonna go vote and don't wanna be involved with, like, all of the electoral bullshit, but are true believers in the Donald Trump MAGA movement and are just gonna go vote. So heard.
BRIAN DERRICK:No, it's that. Yeah. I wanna be clear. It's that. I'm not proposing that there, that there's a conspiracy-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah.… BRIAN DERRICK: only that is undercounting them, like has happened- Mm … in the past. No, I had some MAGA warriors in my face in Iowa, and I… One, e- everyone had been, like, drinking, right? Like, I'm sober Sally, like, at this tailgate, and it's just, like, college students Some really dark sided stuff, honestly, like with the college students. But then, like, this, like, older woman, MAGA warrior, Trump's strongest soldier, in my face, and I'm just like, "Go Hawks." Like, I'm not gonna convince you of anything. It was kinda crazy to see, like, in, in 2026, our year of the Lord, to be so… Such a true believer. It blew my mind.
BRIAN DERRICK:I think that there's, like, a certain amount of shame that some, not o- not all, but some Trump voters, not MAGA superstars, but Trump voters feel that also makes them harder to count. Because people know what Trump has done and how just grotesque of a person he is, and some people are just willing to vote for him anyway and sort of make that deal with the devil. But maybe not tell people that they're making that deal with the devil.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah, shame, shame, shame, shame. Shame.
BRIAN DERRICK:Should we talk about SCOTUS?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah, SCOTUS is back. Let's pivot to some more shameful topics, the Supreme Court of the United States of America. Last week, well, they're back in session. Their docket's only half full, so we got a kind of a, we have, like, a idea of what half of the cases are gonna be, but then there's still a whole nother half, so I'm like, "What?" We talked last week about how we f- we felt like we were on the other side of a potential new Supreme Court judge, no retirements, et cetera. But I saw on your Instagram this morning, Brian Derrick, maybe we're not.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah, there's been a lot of panic in the last couple of days because Samuel Alito, who is pretty close to the devil incarnate, gave an interview and was asked, "So about retirement," because he's currently, checks notes, 76, and he's like, "Yeah, I've been thinking about it. I've decided that I have more" … They say the same shit that they always say. Like, "I have more to give for the country for now." Um, but I'm always considering- More to take away. Oh, there's renewed concern that Republicans are going to pressure him to step down during the lame duck if we flip the Senate. If we don't flip the Senate, this is all a moot point because- Mm. He, again, he can step down either of the next two years and have Republicans replace him. But If we do flip the Senate, they will have a very narrow window of about two months where they could try to get it done, and there's low-key nothing Democrats could really do to stop them- Yeah … in that window. I mean, I would argue in 2029, we would just need to take more drastic action to expand the court, institute term limits, remove someone from the court because of the stolen seat, et cetera. But it would be very challenging given our current 47 seats to stop them from doing it if he cooperated. Not that it would prevent them from doing it, but one of the only points of friction is that it would be such a naked partisan power grab to do it in the lame duck that it would increase the likelihood of full-on court reform, which Republicans- Yeah are trying to avoid at all costs. And we've talked about this before, but sometimes threatening the Supreme Court has been enough in American history to get them in line basically.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah. We should FDR their ass and expand the court.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I was looking at some of what they're gonna be ruling on. Have you seen- Yeah have you looked at this? Let's talk about it. The first one is on climate change. Al Gore, where are you? This is huge energy companies versus Boulder County in Colorado, whether federal law blocks states and cities from suing all oil companies under state law for climate changes. That would be horrific if states lost the constitutional right to sue big oil. We need that. There's another case in December around AR-15s, around semi-automatic rifles. It could be or is, I think, the biggest gun case that the court is going to hear in years. As a reminder, there's been literally no substantial gun reform since any mass shooting in this country, including that of kindergartners in Connecticut.
BRIAN DERRICK:What did the Biden gun bill do?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:What the Biden administration did do was they opened, like, an entire office out of the White House run by Greg Jackson Jr. around gun reform.
BRIAN DERRICK:It was mostly background checks, because there was also the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act signed by President Biden on June 25th, 2022, the most significant federal gun safety legislation enacted in 30 years. I mean- Mm … definitely didn't do- Enough … everything, but he got something done.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:He did, yeah. Sorry, Joey B., I left that out. But, you know, the thing about guns is, like, you can print a gun with a, with a 3D printer at home. You don't even need to go to a shop. Like, it, it is really crazy, guns in this country. There's another case in December about whether the administration can deport people to third countries. As many people probably know, people who are being deported are not even being deported back to the country that they immigrated from. They're being deported to a third country that they have no connection or relation to. Some more on how long we can detain non-citizens before they trigger a right to a bond hearing. It goes on and on I mean,
BRIAN DERRICK:indefinite detention without charges
GLENNIS MEAGHER:It's, like, so deeply anti-American to do that. So yeah, just, you know, gird your loins, everyone. SCOTUS is back in session.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah. Gotta, gotta, gotta fix the court. It's not something that the next president should run on, but it's something that they have to be down with. Okay.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Speaking of a lot of sunshine, Brian, did you… For those who are audio only, Brian, there's a intense glare with his sunny windows in his office. That clip of Donald Trump saying that the war's gonna be over soon, everyone just has to deal with it, and why don't we just, like, give up LA and San Diego and nuke them
DONALD TRUMP:With the war, it's just artificial. It's a little bit high. It's a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe. They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yes, I did see this. Again, it sort of speaks to why this is a referendum on Trump, that like no, people are not listening to Democrats' plans for economic policy when the president is talking about a foreign power literally blowing up some of our most populous cities, centers.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Not only that, Brian, San Diego is a huge military hub. A huge portion of our Navy is in San Diego. It's-- it was-- it's insane to me. Yeah. And then he's like, "Everybody go vote and shove it up their ass." And I'm like, "What?"
BRIAN DERRICK:Did he say that?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:You didn't see that? He was like, "Everyone's gotta get out and vote. Pretend I'm on the ballot. Pretend you're voting for me, and then shove it up Democrats' ass." And I'm like, "What?" Like, "Are you okay?" I mean, obviously not, but he's just off, really, really off script.
DONALD TRUMP:Just get out and vote. If you do that, we're gonna win and we're gonna win big. Yeah. And we're gonna shove it up their ass, okay?
BRIAN DERRICK:A lot of his campaign team has just straight up given up. A lot of them have resigned. There's a whole article, say, in Politico about his team being abroad working on foreign governments and campaigns for foreign leaders because they don't see a path here, and they're just trying to cash in. It's bad. It is, it is bad for Republicans.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I was listening to some podcast this morning. I don't recall who it was, but they brought up Texas and Ken Paxton's in some trouble. What's up with the polling in Texas?
BRIAN DERRICK:T- talking about how mess- how big of a mess Republicans are right now, Paxton is already playing the blame game. Like, I- I'm not saying that it's a done deal in, in Texas and that Talarico's gonna win the Senate seat there. That's specifically not what I'm saying. But I will say that Paxton thinks that that is enough of a probability that he seems relatively focused on whose fault it is compared to how to fix the situation. In the last couple of days, he's made news saying things like Trump's midterm convention in the state hurt his polling numbers, that he has no idea why we're at war in Iran, and he thinks that diesel and gas prices are crushing the Republicans, and he has no explanation for it. He has said that he feels he has no control over campaign messaging because his entire campaign has been outsourced to super PACs run by billionaires and DC, and so he has no message for voters in Texas. Oh. It's overall just a very bad situation on the ground, and he's leaking like a sieve. Sieve?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Sieve? I think it's a sieve.
BRIAN DERRICK:Leaking like a sieve. His campaign is full of people who wanna talk to the media about how bad things are going. So it is indicative, I think, of how panicked Republicans really are at this point, that they're already trying to set up scapegoats for the loss.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Let's see what happens. I mean, Ken Paxton, we've talked about this a lot, is, like, hyperbolically a horrible candidate. 100% corrupt, impeached by his own party, deeply unlikable. That's what you get. I'm feeling positive. Texas is my last weekend. I'm closing out the tour in Texas, and I'm excited because that, to me… I feel like also that race, the Talarico-Paxton race, to me, has the most national attention for the Senate races. Maybe El-Sayed is, like, second behind there. For a while, obviously, it was Graham Platner, but now, I mean, I don't know if you watched the-- We're showing clips from the Collins-Jackson debate last night. I feel like the Tal- the Talarico race is exciting and is, is getting people really engaged again in Democratic politics. So let's see. But I saw one clip from the Jackson-Collins debate. That race, we're not looking good though, right?
BRIAN DERRICK:Uh, it's not great. I would say it's, like, 50/50 maybe. Maybe slightly advantage to her
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Maybe we can find the clip and roll it. She was talking about a trade war in Canada. She was like, "I was successful in getting concrete, pulp, and road salt removed from the tariff list,"'cause they're big in Maine, I guess. And Troy Jackson responds,"What about everything else? We can't eat road salt."
BRIAN DERRICK:It's a good line.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:It is. You know what it was giving to me a little bit?
BRIAN DERRICK:Tell me.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Meet the Parents. I have nipples, Greg. Could you milk me?
BRIAN DERRICK:Uh, yeah, it's true.
SUSAN COLLINS:Troy mocked it, but I was successful in getting concrete, pulp, and road salt removed from the tariff list.
TROY JACKSON:That what about everything else? I mean, we, we can't eat road salt. And, and the thing about it is, is that w- everything that she's doing with Iran war and stuff like that, there's gonna be so many less people that'll be able to afford to drive that I'm not even sure the road salt's gonna be worth anything either.
BRIAN DERRICK:Susan Collins is such a bag of dog shit, and also Maine buys her bullshit every time. So not to talk shit on Maine, but I don't know that we're dealing with-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Oh.… BRIAN DERRICK: rational- Don't go there… BRIAN DERRICK: actors. Yeah.
BRIAN DERRICK:Um-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:It is, I mean, Brian, think about the story we talked about two weeks ago about her campaign finance violations. Allegedly, she had some misconduct. That, four years ago, would've been career-ending, and now it was a blip in the radar. Right.
BRIAN DERRICK:Moved on immediately, yeah. The fact that that level of corruption is not even registering with people anymore is the truest sign that we have peaked in Trump's America.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I, I, I know I've died on this hill for the last three, four years, but, like, we the taxpayers pay their salary. Like, why… I- What if I was that corrupt? What if I just decided, "IRS, I'm not paying anymore. You're gonna send my ass to jail, and fast." Why isn't your ass in jail, Susan Collins, for alleged campaign finance issues?
BRIAN DERRICK:Get her.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah, I'm just like, American citizens are held to a completely different standard than the elected officials who represent us, and that's a problem.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yep.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Also, the IRS has fucked up my taxes this year big time, and, like, I called my accountant on it, and they were like, "Yeah, there's a huge issue at the IRS. Things aren't getting done, and their entire online payment portal is shut down."
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah, I regret paying my taxes.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah. Like, they, they-
BRIAN DERRICK:Every
GLENNIS MEAGHER:day. I c- I don't even wanna, like, tell you. It's just, like, so bad what they've done with my taxes, and I'm like, "Okay, you just aren't doing your job."
BRIAN DERRICK:Clickbait or double-click. This is our segment where we go through the headlines of the week and decide if they're clickbait and someone is rage-baiting you somewhere, or if it's a double-click and we should be paying more attention to it. What do you think, Glennis? First one Trump will not reimburse taxpayers for the 10 million-plus dollars in ads that we have paid for him for the midterm elections.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I think I talked about this last week where when I listen to the news now, I'm just like, "Well, duh. Well, duh," like around Trump and his corruption. And I'm like, this in theory, as per my previous rant about American citizens being held to a completely different standard than our elected officials, particularly the, the president of the United States of America, should be a double click because this should piss everyone off.$11.5 million from your pocket, whether it be .5 cents per or whatever, went to a political ad for the president of the United States of America, someone that potentially you didn't even vote for.
BRIAN DERRICK:Well, not even potentially.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Well, like, uh, actually with our listeners- We definitely didn't … you didn't vote for. I'm like thinking we have MAGA listeners out there, you know? I'm trying to reach, reach across the aisle. Yeah, uh, it's just like total bullshit.
BRIAN DERRICK:If so, they're just trying to identify where we are to come find us.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah. Literally, I know. I'm like, "Don't, don't dox me." But here's-- Like, we've talked about this also. We want the Democratic presidential candidate to have accountability as one of their pillars. Yeah.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Straight to jail.
BRIAN DERRICK:Jail. Jail. Jail.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Jail.
BRIAN DERRICK:Jail. Jail. Jail. Jail. Jail.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Not, no prison, federal prison, supermax. Not jail, not the Schenectady County Jail that I had to go to in high school from-
BRIAN DERRICK:For?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Not for me. Like, the teachers brought us- Sure… to show us what could happen.
BRIAN DERRICK:Sure. Sure, sure, sure.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:No, didn't that happen at your school? Yeah. Like, they would bring you to jail to show you what would happen if
BRIAN DERRICK:you were bad. Gunnar's just like, "Yeah, they brought me there for three weeks. It was, it was just a field trip, I swear. I swear." Just a field trip." GLENNIS MEAGHER: Don't check who went to my high school knows what I'm talking about. Which by the way, this is a millennial experience. I don't think they would ever let, do this to Alpha or Gen Z to be like, "We're, we're taking you on a field trip to jail." Okay, next. Speaking of… Oh, this is a bad transition, but I'm gonna do it anyway. Speaking of jail, Christa Pike regains consciousness after failed execution in Tennessee. Horror show. What in the fuck? I'm gonna say with me.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah.
BRIAN DERRICK:Only because I think that the death penalty's not a voting issue for most people. It definitely is a double click for her, let me tell you. It's more of like double tap. That's Zombieland.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Well, here's the thing. She, she murdered someone, a classmate, I looked into it, like when she was young. Murder bad. Murder not good. But yeah, it's not a voting issue. I j- I do think ban the death penalty. You know, the, some states still have like a shooting line as a death penalty. That's
BRIAN DERRICK:about to happen to some guy, I just read this. Maybe South Carolina, they're about to do a firing squad.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Firing squad, which maybe, uh, ban all, ban all death penalty.
BRIAN DERRICK:Probably more effective. Okay. Anyway, so- That's what I was gonna say we haven't even said. Yeah. This woman got two doses, double dosed with a lethal injection, and she's up and talking full on.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:They didn't do it right.
BRIAN DERRICK:No. Who's the guy who survives everything? It's, it's like a old fable.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Uh, uh.
BRIAN DERRICK:Russian.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Unbreakable. Unbreakable. No. Samuel L. Jackson film, Unbreakable. I don't know. No, no. Rasputin. I'm not, I wasn't a classics major.
BRIAN DERRICK:No, wait. Okay. Rasputin. Isn't Rasputin the one- No … who gets like shot and drowned and-
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Rasputin was like the religious advisor to the Tsar Nicholas and the last tsar- Okay … tsarina of Russia.
BRIAN DERRICK:What happened to Rasputin?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Well, I think we know what happened to an appendage of Rasputin.
BRIAN DERRICK:What?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:You don't know this? He had
BRIAN DERRICK:his dick cut off?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yes, and it's like in, it's like saved somewhere and peop- like-
BRIAN DERRICK:What?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Wait, I'm not… This is real. I, this is real, but I don't know. It's ra- this is rage bait, but it's getting the people talking
BRIAN DERRICK:Who got shot and drowned in a river?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:I'll look it up. Let me see. I actually have a book about Rasputin in my apartment
BRIAN DERRICK:Grigori Rasputin, the infamous Russian mystic and advisor to the Romanov royal family, is legendary for the dramatic story surrounding his assassination. According to historic lore, a group of Russian nobles attempted to kill him by first poisoning him with cyanide. When the poison failed, they shot him multiple times. Believing him to be alive or attempting to hide the crime, they wrapped his body and dumped him into the frozen Malaya Nevka River. While forensic evidence suggests the gunshots were the true cause of death, popular myth has long held that he survived the bullets and officially died of drowning. That is what I was talking about.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Okay, one more. Justice Department turns to partisans and conspiracists to fill depleted ranks.
BRIAN DERRICK:Double click, because every hire is somebody that we have to fire in 2029 when we retake the White House. And so the more that Trump hires his cronies into every crack and crevice of the federal government, the more effort it's gonna take to drum them all out. But as I've said for a long time, anyone hired for any role in any position in any agency under the second Trump administration should be fired by executive order the first day that the next president takes office.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah, I'm with you. And as a reminder, you are paying for their salary. You are paying for these conspiratorial people to go fill the Justice Department Okay, Brian, I have a good vibe coming out of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
BRIAN DERRICK:Hit us with it.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:He swiped out $250 million in medical debt in a new executive order that will affect 130,000 residents of Kentucky, and you don't have to apply for it. It's like if you kind of hit these thresholds. It's, it's actually quite sad. If you owe at least 5% of your annual income in medical bills or earn below 400% of the federal poverty line, your debt is cleared. It's, it's crazy to even think that we are burdening these people with medical debt, with bills just to stay alive, but I'm glad that Andy Beshear said, "We're gonna get rid of 250 million of that."
BRIAN DERRICK:100%. That's major, and you know he's doing everything he can for December when he's probably gonna announce he's running for president.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah. I also wanna add one more thing on Kansas with the-- which I just learned about with, with the Democrat is polling quite well. The vibes are good, but as Brian and I discussed on this podcast, keep focused, go to work, et cetera. But I did not realize his opponent, the Republican, a medical doctor, arrested, like had his patients arrested- Yeah … for not paying medical bills, like small medical bills.
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:That's- Feel like…
BRIAN DERRICK:Yeah… GLENNIS MEAGHER: evil. Crazy.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:What kind of doctor are you? You're-- To, to arrest people from not h- for an outstanding $100 medical bill. Alleg- Bananas … alleged, I don't-- Bananas. So that's a bad vibe, but good vibe- … that, that Kansas is like maybe like, "Actually, you suck. You're a bad guy. You're gonna send me to jail for not paying my, you know, premium on a flu shot?"
BRIAN DERRICK:And with that happy thought, go get vaccinated, everyone. Get your flu shot. Honestly- It's flu season.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Mm-hmm. No, h- honestly, go
BRIAN DERRICK:do that. Pay, pay the bill, for sure. And, uh, we'll see you next week if you're not in jail, yeah?
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Yeah, and I'm going to your great home state of Ohio this weekend, so-
BRIAN DERRICK:Ooh, I cannot
GLENNIS MEAGHER:wait to hear- Can't wait to tell you all about it. Yeah, go OH. How do I say it?
BRIAN DERRICK:You s- you just say OH.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:OH.
BRIAN DERRICK:IO.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Woo,
BRIAN DERRICK:woo. Go Bucks. Thanks y'all for listening. We'll be back same time, same place next week. Like, comment, subscribe. We only have a couple weeks left, so we're pushing through to the very end, and then we will have martinis to celebrate after we win the midterms.
GLENNIS MEAGHER:Tini time.
BRIAN DERRICK:See you guys next week
